I've dyed and gone to heaven, and will never go back to using ordinary stains ever again! I use aniline dye on everything now, including cherry and walnut, not just curly maple (where it is absolutely essential). The trick to using aniline is obsessive sanding. Wet the surface of the wood to raise the loose hairs, sand, re-wet, sand again, wet again, and resand. If you don't do these steps, applying water-based aniline dye won't work very well. Yet, the results are spectacular if you do! I use the light brown walnut that Bartley's sells, but also an antique American cherry stain that is equally lovely. Highly recommended.
